Do you know the environmental impacts of your business?

The federal government recently set a climate change target for 2035, committing Australia to a reduction in emissions of between 62% and 70% below 2005 levels. To hit this target, we’ll all need to play our part, whether you’re running a corporate organisation, or a small business.


Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) concerns should be high on your agenda, but do you really know the current environmental impact of your business operations?

Let’s look at four ways to understand your environmental impact

1. Get an environmental audit

An environmental audit is a systematic sustainability review of all your business operations. The aims are 1) to check that you’re compliant with current environmental regulations, and 2) to assess the overall ecological impact of your operations.

Key steps will involve reviewing your internal practices around waste disposal, energy use and resource consumption against benchmark goals for your industry or business type.


2. Set up an environmental management system

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a framework that helps your business systematically reduce its environmental impact and improve efficiency.

This will involve planning out your environmental goals, putting procedures in place to reduce your impact on the environment and check your performance against these goals over time. The EMS is there to hold you to account and drive continuous improvement of your impacts.


3. Report on your impacts

It’s important to report on your sustainability performance – and to make this reporting public, open and transparent. This allows your employees, customers, suppliers and local community stakeholders to get an objective overview of your environmental performance.

Key performance indicators (KPIs) are used to track metrics like the amount of waste reduction, or your total energy usage as a business. Using these KPIs, you can easily compile a public report or website section that compares your actual real-world performance against your Environmental Management System goals.


4. Check government requirements

It’s important to check what the federal and state rules are for environmental reporting, so you’re aware of what’s required from your small business.

Mandatory climate-related financial disclosures were brought in for large companies and financial institutions from January 2025. But small businesses may soon be required to supply similar disclosures, as climate change targets are tightened.

    Right to disconnect to be extended: will your business be affected?

    In August 2024, the government brought in the ‘right to disconnect’. This legislation gives employees the right to refuse to be contacted by their employer outside of usual working hours.


    Previously, the ‘right to disconnect’ rules only applied to businesses with 15 employees or more. But from 26 August 2025, the same rights will apply for employees of small businesses with less than 15 employees – making this a mandatory requirement for all Aussie businesses.


    Let’s take a look at what this means for you and your employees.

    How will the ‘right to disconnect’ affect your business?

    Your employees will have the right to refuse to monitor, read or respond to contact (or attempted contact) outside their usual agreed working hours. 


    Employees must be reasonable with this refusal (i.e. if refusing to connect affects their ability to carry out their role), but employers must also consider the rights of their team.

    Whether a refusal is unreasonable will depend on the circumstances. The following factors must be considered:

    The reason for the contact

    The nature of the employee's role and level of responsibility

    The employee's personal circumstances

    How the contact is made and how disruptive it is to the employee;

    And any relevant extra pay or compensation they receive for working additional hours or remaining available to work out of hours

    REASSESS YOUR GOALS 

    Do you have clear business goals for the short-term and long-term? Either set some realistic goals or revise them if they are too difficult right now.

    COMMIT TO SOME REGULAR SELF-CARE ACTIONS

    Think about what you love doing outside your business that is nourishing. Regular exercise? Time in nature? Going on a retreat? Learning something for fun? Improving your diet? Get an app on your phone that reminds you to take mini breaks throughout each day. Whether that is movement, mindfulness or music, use technology to help.

    Get set for a minimum wage increase

    The Fair Work Commission (the Commission) has announced:

    • the National Minimum Wage will be increased to $882.80 per week or $23.23 per hour
    • a 5.75% increase to minimum award wages.


    The increase applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2023.


    National Minimum Wage increase

    The National Minimum Wage applies to employees who aren’t covered by an award or registered agreement.


    From 1 July 2023, the new National Minimum Wage will be $882.80 per week or $23.23 per hour.


    The new National Minimum Wage will apply from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2023. This means if your weekly pay period starts on Monday, the new rates will apply from Monday, 3 July 2023.


    Award minimum wage increase


    Most employees are covered by an award. Awards are legal documents that outline minimum pay rates and conditions of employment in your industry or occupation. If you’re not sure which award applies to you, use Find my award.


    This increase will apply from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2023. This means if your weekly pay period starts on Monday, the new rates will apply from Monday, 3 July 2023.


    Agreements

    If you’re covered by a registered agreement, the minimum wage increase may apply. This is because the base pay rate in a registered agreement can’t be less than the base pay rate in the relevant award. Check your agreement by searching for it on the Commission’s website: Find an agreement.


    Other upcoming changes

    Secure Jobs, Better Pay: 6 June changes to workplace laws

    From 6 June 2023, there are changes related to:

    • requesting flexible working arrangements
    • extending unpaid parental leave
    • agreement-making
    • bargaining.


    Aged care sector

    Direct care and some senior food services employees in the aged care sector will receive a 15% wage increase from 30 June 2023.

    Keeping your business cash liquid – the difference between cashflow and profit

    The foundational goal of any business is to make a profit. As a business owner, that’s one of your key financial aims – to make enough sales, at a big enough margin, to generate profit from your enterprise. But how does profit differ from cashflow? And why is cash king?


    How do profit and cashflow differ?


    To really understand the difference between generating profit and managing cashflow, we need to look at what both these terms mean. You might think that delving into the accounts is a job for your adviser, but being in control of your profit and cashflow is an invaluable business skill.


    Let’s take a look at the differences:

    • What is profit? – Profit is the surplus that’s left from your income once you’ve paid your expenses, supplier bills and tax etc. It's driven by creating a profit margin and generating value from your products and/or services.
    • What is cashflow? – Cashflow is the ongoing process of ensuring that the business has the available cash (or ‘liquid’ cash) needed to operate. This provides the money needed to trade, to pay suppliers, to cover wages or to buy raw materials etc.


    Why is positive cashflow so important?


    ‘Cash is king!’ may be a cliche these days, but it’s a maxim which underpins any successful business model. Yes, it’s great to make a profit at year-end, but if you don’t look after your cashflow then the business may not survive as long as the end of the year.


    What’s needed is good cashflow management to enhance your financial health. And without a careful eye on your cash numbers, things can quickly go awry.


    A business can generate high revenues and big profits, but still be cashflow poor. In other words, it can have profits at the end of the period, but have very little liquid cash to fund it's day-to-day operations over the course of the period.

    2023 Federal Budget - Social security measures announced

    The Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers handed down the 2023 Federal Budget on 9 May 2023, as part of the budget, the following social security measures have been announced.


    Child care subsidy


    From 1 July 2023 changes to the childcare subsidy will come into effect, families with a combined household income below $530,000 could see a lift in their subsidy of up to 20%.


    For families earning less than $80,000, the subsidy for their first child will climb to 90 per cent, those on more than $80,000, their subsidy will progressively fall based on their income. This will go down by 1% for each $5,000 of family income.


    Electricity bills rebate


    Veterans, pensioners, concession card holders and people on government support payments will be eligible for relief of up to $500 in energy bills.


    Up to $650 will also be paid to small businesses, as the government seeks to neutralise price rises for this year and 2024. Residents of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and the ACT will receive up to $350 in rebates and up to $500 for the other states to support with higher price rises.


    Jobseeker recipients


    The Jobseeker rate will permanently increase for all recipients from 20 September 2023, the effect of this will be as follows:


    Older Australians - Australians aged 55 and over will benefit from the extension of the eligibility of a higher rate in the Jobseeker payment. People who have been on the welfare payment for nine or more continuous months will receive an extra $90 per fortnight. This was previously only made eligible to those aged 60 and over.


    Young Australians - Young people on income support payments will also receive a much-needed boost, as Austudy and Youth Allowance are both set to be lifted by $40 a fortnight.


    Single parents


    Previously, single parents were required to apply for Jobseeker once their youngest dependent child reached 8 years of age, this age limit has now been lifted to 14 years.


    The change means eligible parents will receive an additional $176.90 a fortnight if they are on the base rate, amounting to $922.10 per fortnight in total.This benefit is set to specially support women, as majority single parents in Australia are currently women.


    Low-income renters


    Recipients of commonwealth rent assistance (CRA) will receive more financial support. The maximum rate of the CRA payment will increase by 15%.


    For a single CRA recipient with no dependents who does not share their rental home with anyone else, and who is receiving the maximum amount of assistance, their payment will increase from $157.20 a fortnight to $180.80.


    Please note, all the above social security measures are pending parliamentary approval before they come into effect.
